HISTORY & TIMELINE:

After reconnecting out west in 2009, Coach Mike & Coach Laura moved back to North Carolina in 2010.

They settled in Asheville—where Laura’s son Noah & daughter Chandler attended A.C. Reynolds High School.  Mike became a volunteer varsity basketball coach there, where he met and “mentored” Cal Maxwell, the team’s starting guard and 3-point specialist.  We put “mentored” in quotation marks because Cal was the most mature & team-oriented player Mike had ever coached.  If anything – Cal mentored Mike!  Meantime – Chandler, who has high functioning autism, went to every game.

Mike, Laura, Chandler and Noah moved to Apex in 2014. Cal followed in 2015 to attend his beloved N.C. State. Mike had coached Chandler in Special Needs basketball in California, and he shared his dream of a North Carolina program with Cal and a few others, who quickly came aboard.

The program debuted in Cary in 2016, then found a fulltime home in Apex before starting branches in Wake Forest, Garner and Dayton, Ohio.  It’s grown from 20 athletes to almost 300, and Journey League is poised to serve as many athletes as possible all over the USA!

What’s amazing is that Cal and his friends James & Trevor were 18 years old when we started!  Wow!
